Sixth Grade Democracy
When sixth grade students acted up at a Houston-area elementary school the other day, their teachers thought it was an opportunity for some education in the democratic process:
[T]eachers in the four classes told students to vote for classmates who they thought had acted the worst. Those students would be punished by not being able to participate in an afternoon play period, teachers said.
But instead of the students receiving a lesson in democracy, the teachers and faculty got a little tutoring in human nature:
But instead of voting for the children they knew had caused the most trouble, the students voted for the classmates they liked the least, said school district spokeswoman Shirley Brothers. Two of the students went to counselors and Principal Kelly Jackson to complain that they were being treated unfairly.
Heh. I guess Lord of the Flies was not on the reading list yet.
