Your Response, Sir

Letter to the Arizona Republic:

Question of the day for Luke Air Force Base: Whom do we thank for the morning air show?
Last Wednesday, at precisely 9:11 a.m., a tight formation of four F-16 jets made a low pass over Arrowhead Mall, continuing west over Bell Road at approximately 500 feet. Imagine our good fortune!
Do the Tom Cruise-wannabes feel we need this wake-up call, or were they trying to impress the cashiers at Mervyns' early-bird special?

Response printed in the Arizona Republic:

Regarding "A wake-up call from Luke's jets" (Letters, Thursday):
On June 15, at precisely 9:12 a.m., a perfectly timed four-ship of F-16s from the 63rd Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base flew over the grave of Capt Jeremy Fresques.
Capt. Fresques was an Air Force officer who was previously stationed at Luke Air Force Base and was killed in Iraq on May 30, Memorial Day.
Based on the letter writer's recount of the flyby, and because of the jet noise, I'm sure you didn't hear the 21-gun salute, the playing of taps, or my words to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques as I gave them their son's flag on behalf of the president of the United States and all those veterans and servicemen and women who understand the sacrifices they have endured. [...]
The letter writer asks, "Whom do we thank for the morning air show?"
The 56th Fighter Wing will call for you, and forward your thanks to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques, and thank them for you, for it was in their honor that my pilots flew the most honorable formation of their lives.

Words fail me...and it's a good thing, too. Otherwise that pathetic complainer would have summoned forth a Supernova of Profanity.

Bear in mind that being an American is no longer about fighting for what is right because we believe in it so strongly. It's all about what impact that fight has on me personally. Oh, and that impact had better be zero.

My Grandmother lived on rations and was afraid to answer the door for fear that my Grandfather had been killed in loyal service to his country. She never got that knock, thank God.

This person is complaining because he couldn't sleep in as he would prefer to do. Does the American public fail to recognize the serious nature and intense need for the war we are fighting? Or do they just not give a damn until it disturbs their othwerwise peaceful slumber?

Go fight your war on terror because you had better prevent another plane from flying into my office building. I don't want to breath in all that dust from a building collapse. But you better not raise my taxes to do it because I'm saving for a big screen tv. And you had better not wake me up when I'm sleeping in. That's just too high a price for me to bear.

There was a time in this country when every citizen considered it their duty to sacrifice for the war effort. It does not appear that Americans today are willing to sacrifice for anything. Give me everything I want and don't charge me for it, you damn government. Oh yeah, and I want it right now.

P.S. Since when is 9:15am considered a "wake up" call?
