Pining For The Sixties
Neo-neocon observes that many on the anti-war left are quick to play on fears of a renewed military draft:
I have noticed for quite some time now how intent many on the left/liberal seem to be on instituting a draft (or at least on pretending to, for argument's sake). Such a draft, if instituted, appears to be a "backdoor" way of getting what they want, which is to amplify antiwar sentiment to a fever pitch and have us pull out of Iraq--in other words, to recreate Vietnam and the scene of the left's greatest triumph, the fall of Saigon and the Communist takeover of South Vietnam ...
I read an article the other day that alluded to the fact that for a twenty year old, the first Iraq war is a fading memory; the sixties are ancient history. The core group of leftists whose emotional lives are still defined by the Vietnam war protests are still culturally influential, but their numbers are dwindling.
And the draft ain't coming back.

Interesting who seems to want the draft back, isn't it?
In 2003, New York democrat Charlie Rangel proposed a bill (H.R.163) to reinstate the draft. Under the Rangel plan, men and women between the ages of 18 and 26 would be eligable. Exemptions include those finishing high school, but not those in college (not sure if Rangel planned to repay all that tuition money). Those who don't qualify due to impairments would be required to perform community service.
Can anyone tell me how Rangel still has a job in government? Fritz Hollings, South Carolina democrat proposed a similar bill (S.89) to the Senate at the same time as Rangel was presenting to the House.
So, all those liberals who are screaming that Bush's policy in Iraq will reinstitute the draft might want to consider firing the people who are actually presenting bills to do so: one democrat from New York and one democrat from South Carolina.

I've got a great post to write on the new Army, if I could just buy a spare couple hours.
