Clever, Smug and Clueless
I don't usually blog much about abortion--it's taken me a long time to sort out my feelings on this supremely emotional question. But in the last few months I've come to at least one rock-solid conclusion: Roe v. Wade is an abysmal decision and needs to be overturned.
Check out this photo from a San Francisco pro-choice rally I found over at K-Block:

Roe v. Wade says that this woman has a constitutional right to leave this rally, drive straight to the nearest abortion clinic and have her pregnancy terminated. This is not a question of religion--it's a question of the basic morality that should connect all of us humans--Christians, Jews, Moslems or atheists. This mom-to-be is marching to assert her right to absolute control of her own body, yet in the slogan printed on her belly she is imparting a thinking consciousness to her unborn child.
Here's a news flash for you, Ms. Smugness--when you're seven months pregnant, it's not just about you anymore.

Isn't the point that it's NOT a baby and can't make choices?
I saw this picture a couple of days ago and while I'm with you, I don't have a great deal to say about abortion, it has haunted me.

For sure. It's just galling to me that this woman thinks that a six or seven month fetus exists at her pleasure; that she thinks that the fact that she happens to be ready for motherhood is somehow the only thing that matters.
I'm pro-choice as far as first term pregnancies go. I'm not real comfortable with that decision; I wouldn't want to defend my position against someone like Ramesh Ponnuru. It's equally clear to me that 3rd term abortions are an abomination, so somewhere a line must be drawn. Not a very elegant solution, but it beats what we have now.
And that's leaving aside all of the constitutional law arguments about Roe v Wade, which is another topic altogether.

A better caption (if truer is better) would have been "my mother is pro-life but did a crappy job of raising me".

lol @ Jeff - nice one!
It was quite canny of pro-abortion lobby to hijack the word "choice"; no right-minded person would deny somebody reasonable choice. I daresay Bin Laden is "pro choice" when it comes to bombs. And the guy breaking into your car as you read this is pro-choice regarding GTA. Note: These comparisons are aimed at those who "choose" (their word!) abortion, and absolutely NOT at the poor souls for whom it is a tragic neccessity. The former group cheapens the latter's plight.

I'm not against abortion in the first trimester. I don't like it, and I'm probably copping out, morally.
But there is no doubt that abortion during the last trimester is and should be ethically and morally repulsive to any emotionally healthy person.
