Pull The Other One, Helen

The British have a saying "Pull the other one!" that they use when they hear something outrageous; I imagine it derives from "You're pulling my leg."

Helen Thomas invoked my use of the term when I read the headline of her editorial in the Houston Chronicle today:

Isn't it time for Rumsfeld to exit his post gracefully?

It took me a while to get over my laughter at the idea of Helen Thomas demanding that anyone retire.

Yeah--she could be the first to discover immortality: if she refrained from issuing a death notice, then no one would ever notice the difference.

Everyone would be so glad she'd finally shut up they'd be delighted to put up with a stuffed Helen in the front row.
