Handwringing And Crystal Balls
Captain Ed notes that the Washington Post thinks an attack on Iran's nuclear weapons facilities would result in dire consequences for the US:
As tensions increase between the United States and Iran, U.S. intelligence and terrorism experts say they believe Iran would respond to U.S. military strikes on its nuclear sites by deploying its intelligence operatives and Hezbollah teams to carry out terrorist attacks worldwide.Iran would mount attacks against U.S. targets inside Iraq, where Iranian intelligence agents are already plentiful, predicted these experts.
Experts, experts everywhere--and how much would I bet on their analyses? Not much, given our systematically degraded and politically-biased intelligence services. And the fear evident in the Post's handwringing is palpable. Gee, I guess we'd better recall all the troops so we can defend our shorelines--the Iranians may deploy its intellegence operatives! The Post goes on to note:
They say airstrikes would most likely inflame the Muslim world, alienate reformers within Iran and could serve to unite Hezbollah and al-Qaeda, which have only limited contact currently.
Inflame the Muslim world? Let's see--the US deposed Saddam Hussein and nary a blip occurs on the Arab street; a Danish newspaper (among others) publishes some cartoons depicting Allah with a bomb-turban, and the Arab street explodes.
I don't think predictions about the Arab street should factor into US defense policy.
UPDATE: AJ Strata also noticed the scared weasel words coming from the media, and observed:
These people [the MSM] are trying to create some reasonable sounding media spin to blunt the military option being used to stop Iran getting nuclear bombs. These are talking points pulled together to give the impression Iran is too unstable and a much greater terrorist threat than Al Qaeda, so we cannot ever contemplate stopping their efforts to gain WMDs.It is this suicidal ‘logic’ of capitulation in the face of blood thirsty animals that is the real threat.
Capitulation is exactly right.
