Infighting Among Iraqi Shiites Weakens Iran's Hand

Bill Roggio continues his comprehensive coverage of the situation in Iraq with a report on a possible fracture in the Shiite UIA party: Jalal al-Deen al-Saghir, a top member of one of the main sub-factions of the UIA has called for Ibrahim al-Jaafari, the current Prime Minister and candidate to lead the newly elected Iraqi government, to step down from his candidacy. al-Saghir is said to be a close associate of Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, the most influential Shiite in Iraq. Bill Roggio:

It is clear Sistani has jettisoned support for Jaafari, which all but spells the end of Jaafari's bid to lead the new government and Sadr's influence with Jaafari. Sadr has overreached with his threats against SCIRI's Abd al-Aziz al-Hakim and members of the UIA, as well as the actions of his Mahdi Army militia, and will pay a harsh political price for his actions.

I wonder if the triangulation of power between the Sunnis, Kurds and Shiites will coalesce more around Iraqi nationalism (even if that nationalism is motivated by self-interest) rather than allowing the Iranians to exert influence.

If Bill's report is correct, and since al-Jaafari is the candidate of choice of the pro-Iran al-Sadr, the continuing growth of resistance to al-Jaafari sounds like good news indeed.
